That’s a Wrap

April 7th, 2005

Sometimes the episodes of The Tinfoiled Show have an ending, sometimes they don’t. The storyline progresses anyway.

Here’s some developments in the storylines, some of which I’ve already blogged about.

1. I sent my Freebox back and resubscribed to the France Telecom service. At this point, Freebox acknowledged the return of the modem and started charging me the monthly fee. They hadn’t started charging me earlier because the service was never, ever connected.

Thankfully, I had sent a letter to the bank objecting to any automatic withdrawals from Free ADSL.

2. I’m staying in my apartment for the moment. My landlords found a better place for their daughter. I had a bit of a dispute with them at this news — they were surprised that I was upset about their lack of consideration. They apologized profusely.

I’m still keeping my eyes open for someplace better, and I’m not relying on this apartment for the rest of my stay in Paris — but I’m not leaving in the short term.

3. My mix CD has been permanently disrupted by an influx of very good music: the new Beautiful South (re-interpreted cover tunes), back to Depeche Mode, Lambchop, Damien Rice and Mylo. And I had just about finished the cover art.

Just a teaser — the tentative title of the mix was “It Gets Thrills to the Table on Time” and, as usual, included more than it’s share of ironic misogyny. I think I’ll be moving it in another direction.

4. My plans to buy an iPod Shuffle when I was in Canada were foiled by the delay in the launch date. Why doesn’t anyone ever come to Paris in the spring?

5. I returned to 8 hours of sleep when I got a cold. Plus I took Cold-FX tablets. It seems to have passed by with nothing more than a tickle in the throat, but I’m staying at 8 hours this week.

6. Running: on track. I’ve been doing six kilometres (untimed) twice a week through the forest at work. Rollerblading: mostly on track — I did the 3 hour randonnée through Paris two weeks ago, but missed last week. I hate going by myself, so I’m going to join an association (and take some lessons) either this summer or in the fall when I get back from Canada. Aikido: going to my first lesson on Monday, in order to decide whether it’s interesting.

Actually, rollerblading and the randonnée are sufficiently interesting to warrant another entry. Some other time.

7. Exfoliation: once weekly. I don’t know if it actually does that much, but it feels good.

8. Don’t try and solve this image puzzle because it is too cool for words and will suck up your time. There’s fifteen stages, and I’m currently stuck at eight — but I’m supremely proud for having passed stage five!

So, you’re pretty much up to date.

Well, I got to stage 3 on the image puzzle. I have no idea how anyone could get past that. I’ve never been able to see anything in those 3D pictures. To my eyes it’s just a completely regular pattern of nonsense, no words to be found. I’ve tried squinting and blinking rapidly, but no dice. Any advice is appreciated.

    Cool image puzzles, TF!

I was happy to solve Stage 3 – but Stage 4 is giving me a headache and seems hopeless. You must have done well to get all the way to Stage 8.

my eyes are dim, i cannot see, i can’t find a way to pass stage 3…

seriously, i’m on the edge of an epileptic episode!

Okay, I finally got stage 3 and 4, but now I’m stuck on stage 5. Ouch, my brain!

  5. April 8th, 2005 at 06:51 | #5

Also stuck on stage 3…how were you ever able to make it to stage 8???

  6. April 8th, 2005 at 08:52 | #6

Stage 4 was the first one where I had to download the image into the GIMP and manipulate it.

Stage 5 was a son of a bitch to solve. I don’t want to give any hints, but it nearly killed me.

I just discovered some hints (on the original blog where I found this link), and there’s a much easier solution to stage 5 — but you’d have to be an idiot to stumble onto it.

I’m not going to tell you where the hints are though — it wrecks the game. I still haven’t passed stage 8, but I know the right direction to take.

    Also, Maroon 5 rocks.

  8. April 9th, 2005 at 09:17 | #8

Maroon 5 does rock. Also, staring at magic eye pictures gives me a headache and too many other things are currently causing headaches for me to voluntarily induce another…I leave it to all of you to complete this mission from god on your own.

On a completely unrelated note – how unbelievable creepy was it to have the dead pope lying there decaying while a million morons marched by.

    I just don’t get humans…

I, too, have trouble figuring out magic eye puzzles. Infact, I have never seen ‘the mystery image’ and strongly suspect that they don’t exist. It’s all part of the giant conspiracy to push me over the edge…

Also I think I’m losing my ‘smarts’ as I took the flash test and scored well below the other IQ tests I have taken over the years. (I once peeked at my score in my school permanent record.)

I’m looking forward to the music mix, even if it does contain Maroon 5.

As for the image puzzle, I gave up instantly when I saw stage 3. My dad the opthamologist has tested my vision on these ‘colour dot’ puzzles before, and I am beyond hopeless. My ability to distinguish colours is dismal. Still, I’d rather be colour-blind than blind!

    Cool – puzzles! I’m a fan.
I just got through the first 4 pretty quick, but 5′s a stinker. I’m thinking a might need to use IE to solve it. I’ll try at home.

(Also you don’t have to actually download #4 if you use magic fingers with your monitor adjustments)

  12. April 13th, 2005 at 09:15 | #12

Woohoo – finished it. However, 15 is a real doozy. I had to actually look at the hint for 15 and even then it was stupidly hard. If you can pull the last one off without the hint, I bow down to you.

  13. April 14th, 2005 at 02:09 | #13

Hmmmm…. finally got through #5 after only 1 week!

I was very very upset when I realized what the solution was – I still can’t believe that TinFoiled would subject us to that particular one.

I seem to not be very good at these – so hats off to Roggles.

  14. April 14th, 2005 at 09:28 | #14

I hate to give away little hints here and there — but there’s a super easy solution to #5 and a super hard solution.

I did the super hard solution, and it involved investigating the pixels of each letter. And lots of counting.

  15. April 15th, 2005 at 09:27 | #15

Yes, I highly recommend doing #5 the easy way (hint: you need to use Internet Explorer)

As an incentive, Snowy – there are 3 puzzle series after all these image ones that are quite easy, and one in particular that’s right up your alley.

I must admit I have an unfair advantage, in that I spend a ridiculous amount of time on the web and have been doing a lot of image manipulation recently.

  16. April 15th, 2005 at 20:09 | #16

OK – after (finally) getting through #5, I quickly reached #15 – so I guess I’m not completely dim – but I’m stuck here. Rats! So close – so far.

I’m not sure what hints you guys are alluding to – but I strongly suspect that a google search will discover them. No hang on – I prefer to do this old school – no help from the interweb. It may take me a month – but I will solve #15. Mark my words.
